How We Calculate This

How the Formula Works

Your final counts for a set share of your overall grade, and everything you've done so far counts for the rest. To hit your target, subtract what your current grade contributes and divide what's left by the final's weight. That's the score you need on the final.

Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight

Already know each category's grade and want your current overall instead? Use the Weighted Grade Calculator to work it out, then bring that number back here.

If You've Already Secured It

When your current grade is high enough that even a 0 on the final still clears your target, the score you need shows as 0%. You've locked in your target, though most students still aim higher.

Max Achievable Overall

Alongside the score you need, the calculator shows the highest overall grade you can still reach: the result of scoring 100% on the final. If your target is above that number, it's out of reach on a standard final. It may still be possible if your final offers extra credit, which is why the exact score you'd need appears instead of a cap at 100%.

Final Grade Calculator Formula

The grade you need on the final to hit your target overall:

Needed = (Target โˆ’ Current ร— (1 โˆ’ Final Weight)) รท Final Weight

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your current grade in the class (the percentage you have now, before the final).
  2. Enter the weight of the final: how much of your overall grade it counts for (e.g. 20%).
  3. Enter your target overall grade and click Calculate to see the score you need on the final.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a final grade calculator?

A final grade calculator tells you the score you need on your final exam to reach a target overall grade. Enter your current grade, how much the final is worth, and the overall grade you're aiming for, and it works backwards to the score you need.

How do I find how much my final is worth?

Check your syllabus. It lists each part of your grade and its weight. The final's weight is the percentage of your overall grade it counts for, such as 20% or 30%. Enter that number in the weight field.

What does a needed score of 0% mean?

It means your current grade is already high enough to reach your target even if you score nothing on the final. You've secured your target, though it's still worth doing well on the final.

Can the score I need be above 100%?

Yes. If your target is higher than what a perfect final would give you, the needed score comes out above 100%. On a standard final that's out of reach, but it may be possible if your final offers extra credit, so the exact number appears instead of a cap.

What's the difference between this and the weighted grade calculator?

This calculator solves backwards: it finds the final score you need to hit a target. The Weighted Grade Calculator works forwards, so you enter every category's grade and weight and it computes your current overall grade. Use that one first if you don't know your current grade yet.
