How to Calculate and Split the Tip

Multiply the bill by your tip rate to get the tip, then add it back to the bill for the total. To split the tip and bill among a group, divide that total by the number of people so everyone pays the same share.

Tip = Bill × (Tip% / 100)
Per Person = (Bill + Tip) / Number of People

On a $60 bill at 20%, the tip is $12 and the total is $72. Split three ways, each person pays $24.

How Much to Tip in the US

Tipping norms vary by service. These are common US ranges:

Restaurants: 15%–20% of the pre-tax bill, 20%–25% for great service

Pre-Tax or Post-Tax?

Tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total is common too, and it leaves a slightly larger tip that servers appreciate. Either is fine, so pick one and stay consistent.
