How We Calculate This

How the Weighted Average Works

Each category's grade is multiplied by its weight, those products are added up, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. A category counts only when it has both a grade and a weight, so half-filled rows are ignored.

Overall = Σ(Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight)

Trying to figure out what you need on a final to reach a target grade? Use the Final Grade Calculator instead. It works backwards from your target.

Weights Don't Have to Add Up to 100%

Most syllabi have weights that add up to 100. If yours don't, the calculator still works. It divides by whatever your weights total, so the result is a true weighted average either way. When the total isn't 100%, you'll see a note so you can double-check your numbers.

Extra Credit

Grades above 100% are allowed for extra credit. They pull your overall grade above 100% too. There's no cap.

Letter Grade Scale

This calculator uses a standard plus/minus scale. Check your syllabus, since scales vary by school.

  • A+ 97–100
  • A 93–96
  • A- 90–92
  • B+ 87–89
  • B 83–86
  • B- 80–82
  • C+ 77–79
  • C 73–76
  • C- 70–72
  • D+ 67–69
  • D 63–66
  • D- 60–62
  • F below 60

Weighted Grade Calculator Formula

Your overall grade is the weighted average of each category's grade:

Overall = ฮฃ (Grade ร— Weight) รท ฮฃ (Weight)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a weighted grade calculator?

A weighted grade calculator combines grades from different categories (like homework, exams, and finals), each counted toward your overall grade by a weight your teacher assigns. Enter each category's grade and weight, and it computes your overall percentage and letter grade.

Do my weights have to add up to 100%?

No. The calculator divides by the total of your weights, so it produces a correct weighted average whatever they add up to. If the total isn't 100%, you'll see a note pointing it out so you can check your numbers.

What happens if I leave a category's grade or weight blank?

That category is skipped. A category counts only when it has both a grade and a weight, so a half-filled row won't throw off your result. Fill in both to include it.

Can I enter extra credit grades above 100%?

Yes. Grades can exceed 100% for extra credit, with no upper cap. They'll pull your overall grade above 100% too.

Does this use the same letter grade scale as my school?

This calculator uses a standard plus/minus scale (A+ through F). Some schools use a different scale or don't award A+, so check your syllabus if you need an exact match.
