How We Calculate This

How the Four Values Relate

A percent-off discount links four numbers: the original price, the percent off, the final (sale) price, and the amount saved. Knowing any two of them is enough to find the other two:

  • Final price = Original price − Amount saved
  • Amount saved = Original price × (Percent off / 100)
  • Percent off = (Amount saved / Original price) × 100

Every other combination is a rearrangement of these same three relationships. Enter any two values and this calculator finds the rest.

Worked Example

A $39.99 shirt is 20% off. Amount saved = $39.99 × (20 / 100) = $8.00. Final price = $39.99 − $8.00 = $31.99. Enter 39.99 in Original Price and 20 in Percent Off, leave Final Price and Amount Saved blank, and the calculator returns $31.99 and $8.00.

Percent Off Calculator Formula

Final price from original price and percent off:

Final = Price × (1 − Percent / 100)

Amount saved:

Saved = Price − Final

Percent off from original and final price:

Percent = (Saved / Price) × 100

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter values for exactly two of the four fields: Original Price, Percent Off, Final Price, or Amount Saved.
  2. Leave the other two fields blank. They're the ones you want to find.
  3. Click Calculate to solve the other two. The computed values are highlighted.
  4. Copy the URL to share your result. The link auto-fills the inputs and calculates on load.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many values do I need to enter?

Exactly two. Enter any two of original price, percent off, final price, or amount saved, and the calculator solves the other two. Leave the two you want to find blank.

Can I calculate the percent off from the original and sale price?

Yes. Enter the original price and the final (sale) price, leave percent off and amount saved blank, and the calculator computes both: the discount percentage and how much you saved.

What if I only know how much I saved?

Enter the original price and the amount saved (or the amount saved and the final price), and the calculator solves for the percent off and the remaining unknown.

Why do I get an error when I fill in more or fewer than two fields?

The calculation needs exactly two known values to solve for the other two. With zero, one, three, or four fields filled, there isn't a unique answer, so the calculator asks you to adjust which fields are filled.

Can values be negative?

No. Prices, percentages, and savings amounts are all zero or positive in this calculator. A negative value doesn't correspond to a real discount.

Is 100% off supported?

Yes. Enter the original price with a percent off of 100, and the calculator returns a final price of $0 and an amount saved equal to the original price.

Can I share my calculation?

Yes. After clicking Calculate, the URL updates with the two values you entered. Copy and share the URL to let anyone else see the same pre-filled form and result.
