How We Calculate This

How to Calculate Percentages on a Calculator

The percent key on a physical calculator trips a lot of people up, so here is the manual method that always works. To find a percentage of a number, divide the percentage by 100, then multiply. For 25% of 200, press 25 ÷ 100 × 200 to get 50. If your calculator has a % key, 200 × 25 % also returns 50 on most models.

X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y

The tool above does this for you: pick X% of Y, type the two numbers, and read the answer. No percent key, no guessing which button does what.

Finding the Percentage of Two Numbers

"What percentage is one number of another" is the reverse question. Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. Say 30 people out of 120 chose an option: 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%, so 30 is 25% of 120.

X is what % of Y = (X ÷ Y) × 100

Use the X is what % of Y tab for this. It is the fastest way to turn two raw numbers into a percentage, whether you are scoring a test, checking a discount, or reading a survey result.

Percentage Change vs. Percentage Points

Percentage change measures how much a value grew or shrank relative to where it started: subtract the old value from the new, divide by the old, multiply by 100. Going from 100 to 150 is a 50% increase.

% change = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100

Percentage points are different. A rate that moves from 10% to 15% rose 5 percentage points, but that same move is a 50% relative increase. News reports often confuse the two. Use percent change for growth and decline; use percentage points when you are comparing two rates directly.

Percentage Calculator Formula

Finding X% of Y:

Result = (X / 100) × Y

Finding what % X is of Y:

Result = (X / Y) × 100

Percentage change from X to Y:

Result = ((Y - X) / X) × 100

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select the tab for the calculation you need: X% of Y, X is what % of Y, or % Change.
  2. Enter the required values in the input fields.
  3. Click Calculate to see the result instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

To find X% of Y, divide X by 100 and multiply by Y. For example, 15% of 300 is (15 / 100) * 300 = 45. For tipping scenarios, the tip calculator handles percentage and bill-splitting in one step.

What is the percentage change formula?

Percentage change = ((New Value - Old Value) / Old Value) * 100. A positive result means an increase; a negative result means a decrease.

Can I calculate percentage change from zero?

No. Percentage change from zero is mathematically undefined because you would be dividing by zero. The calculator will display an error in this case.

How do I find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, to find what percent 30 is of 120: (30 / 120) * 100 = 25%.

Does this calculator work with negative numbers?

Yes. All three modes support negative numbers. For example, -20% of 50 = -10, and the percentage change from 200 to 100 = -50%.

What is the difference between percentage points and percent?

A percentage point is an absolute difference between two percentages. For example, going from 10% to 15% is a 5 percentage point increase, but a 50% relative increase. This calculator computes relative percentage change.

How do you do percentages on a calculator?

To find a percentage of a number, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For 20% of 80, enter 20 / 100 * 80 to get 16. The X% of Y tab above does this automatically, so you never have to hunt for the percent key.

How do I find the percentage of two numbers?

Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 60 is 45 / 60 * 100 = 75%. Use the X is what % of Y tab to do it in one step.
